Your New Favourite Fanzine!
[My friend Nathan Barney suggested that in order to become a self-facilitating media node I needed to be across every media site... so sorry if this is a repeat]
Check out Jay Hinman’s ever expanding Radio Dies Screaming empire…
Anyone, who like me, has spent a solid 3 decades now
complaining that life isn't worth living because Forced Exposure and Conflict
are no more... you got some great reading ahead of you!
Jay Hinman, who used to do a zine called Super Dope in the 1990's ( The final
issue, #8 made it to NZ, I read that one way back in 1998), has been quietly
putting out the very excellent Dynamite Hemorrhage for the last half a decade
or so.
Here’s the link, and hey, welcome to your new favourite
zine! https://radiodiesscreaming.com/
As we really only give a shit about our own getting the rub
from the Yanks, start with issue#2. Bill Direen gets not just a big interview,
but ALL of the cover.
Very nice. And Jay is one of those crazy American record guys (why is it always guys?) who probably know more about our local underground than most of us... definitely me, not that I'll ever let him know... even if it requires me to just make up random Morley back catalogue rarities, I'll be damned if I'm losing an 'Xpressway and others' pub trivia night to a bloody foreigner!!!
Examples:
Issue #4: They get the cover too, The Kiwi Animal (I just remembered, I have to
post my copy back to Jay, cos I got Brent to autograph it and doodle away...
that's now insecure Jay makes me! I'm prepared to head off to Jerry's house to
be blasted with 'Building 7' conspiracies, all to one up someone who doesn't
even know him and me are competing!
Issue #5: Maxine Funke gets a serious feature. What is this? Rip It Up? Ha ha... to non-New Zealanders, that's a shot at our version of NME or Melody Maker, and yeah, they barely acknowledged Chris Knox so ain't no chance the fragile neo-folk of Maxine Funke was getting a mention. Luckily a guy in San Francisco knows what the kids want to dance to!
Issue #6: Jay ropes in the man who is always welcome at the hangi, Mr Dan Vallor who writes about post- The Garbage & the Flowers groups.
Yeah, he’s not writing about quite obscure group tG&tF,
but the extremely obscure offshoots...I mean seriously, Pit Viper? And The New
Zealand Guitar Orchestra? I mean I seriously thought for a long moment that the
latter WAS one of my "this will confuse Byron and Thurston
Moore' bullshit groups. But nah, not only are they real, Dan even has
the Skoda cassette, which is frankly absurd... hey buddy, leave some for the
locals next time!
I just don't have the writing chops to put Jay and Dynamite Hemorrhage (now called Radio Dies Screaming) over... so please please please follow the links below.
- The crazy bastard puts every issue up as an easy download as soon as he sells out the print copies... FOR FREE! Here’s the link: https://radiodiesscreaming.com/2024/12/10/all-dynamite-hemorrhage-back-issues-can-be-downloaded-here/
- Oh and get this... he actively discourages bands/labels sending product for review, check this madness: "Please don't send physical product. We'd rather not burden struggling labels by not reviewing your wares. That said, mp3, .zip files & the like are gladly accepted"
Ain't this guy the greatest!
- He has also started a film zine, 'Film Hemorrhage'. https://filmhemorrhage.com/
- Also started an amazing blog where he will post cool bits from zines of the past, both legendary and totally obscure. https://fanzinehemorrhage.com/
- What? No free jazz? Oh, I figured that’d be obvious from the start. OBVIOUSLY Jay has a free jazz ‘not really a radio show radio show’, Head over here: https://jazzlibertines.tumblr.com/
- Which reminds me, did I mention Radio Dies Screaming is also a ‘not really a radio show radio show’? And it’s good people, it’s damn good! https://www.mixcloud.com/OtherworldlyGone/
Hell in the time I've taken to type this he's probably started another zine dedicated to gardening or cooking or whatever interests a guy with god tier taste in music might currently be perusing. So you really need to get in now before he REALLY starts writing up a storm!
*** Forgot to shout out Erika Elizabeth, who is a semi-regular contributor to
Dynamite Hemorrhage, and is so amazing if she was from Auckland, well Fake Purr
would have been a 5 piece for sure! She has her own things going on, including
a, say it with me kids “not really a radio show radio show”… get it all here: https://www.futuresandpasts.org/
